Mathematics

Head of department: Miss C McCartan

Overview

The Maths department is a forward facing group of staff who strives to support and challenge our students in numeracy and problem solving. Students develop their reasoning skills through class discussions and are encouraged to explore various ways of reaching a solution. We take them through the course content using a wide range of exciting activities with the help of a wealth of resources, including a dedicated ICT suite.

Years 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11

The following units are taught each year at increasing levels, with a real focus on exam practice at Year 11.

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Statistics
  • Probability
  • Ratio and Proportion
  • Geometry

Homework

Maths homework is designed to embed the knowledge and skills that have been learned in lesson, whilst including extension tasks to ensure our young mathematicians feel sufficiently challenged.

Enrichment

We run a Maths club every week where students can try some perplexing puzzles or simply get help with their homework. We also give students the opportunity to take part in the area Maths Challenge and compete against the best schools in the county in the UK Maths Trust Challenge.
