Homework

Intent

Homework is work that is set to be done outside the taught curriculum. It contains an element of independent study as it is not directly supervised by a teacher. Homework can be completed within school, for example, when tasks require books, software or equipment not found readily at home. Homework enhances pupil learning, improves achievement and develops pupils’ study skills and is an integral part of the curriculum.

Students and parents can check the homework set by clicking here.

The school’s aims in setting homework are:

  1. To help pupils develop good work habits: independent study skills, research skills, time-keeping and resilience.
  2. To help pupils to become self-disciplined and self-motivated towards study.
  3. To enable pupils to practise and reinforce skills learned in the classroom.
  4. To consolidate and extend learning.
  5. To enrich study by making greater use of material and sources of information that may not have been available in the classroom.
  6. To involve parents and carers in the management of pupils learning and keeping them informed about the work pupils are doing.
  7. To allow the teacher to monitor the progress being made by a pupil and to act on findings.

Many items of homework are accessible via the virtual learning environment or can be accessed through a study website, for example Sam learning.

Students will be set homework based on a two week cycle. Pupils in KS4 will be set homework for their core and options subjects once per week. Pupils in KS3 will be set core homework once per week and all other subjects once per fornight. The day on which students recieve homework will depend on the sets and classes they are in.
